Sun Smarts

Your Guide to Sun Protection

Learn about SPF vs. UPF, UVA vs. UVB, and the myths worth knowing. Everything you need before you get dressed.

SUN SMARTS LESSON 01

SPF vs. UPF

SPF sunscreen protects skin from UV rays and needs to be applied generously and reapplied regularly. SPF primarily measures UVB protection, while broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB.

UPF fabric acts as a physical barrier, blocking UVA and UVB rays before they reach your skin. There’s no application variable or reapplication required.

Both help protect your skin from UV damage, but they work in different ways.

SUN SMARTS LESSON 02

UVA vs. UVB

UVB rays primarily affect the skin’s surface, causing sunburn and tanning. They’re mostly blocked by windows, and SPF measures protection against them.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to fine lines, discoloration and premature aging. Their damage builds over time, and they can pass through clouds and windows.

Both damage skin cells and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Fabric Ratings

Not all fabrics are created equal when it comes to sun protection.

Everyday fabrics worn in the sun like cotton and linen can have UPF ratings below 15, while lightweight, loosely woven fabrics can let even more UV reach your skin.

Tied fabrics are tested and rated UPF 50+, the highest UPF rating category, blocking at least 98% of UVA and UVB rays.

Common UPF Myths

MYTH 01

Sunscreen is all I need.

Sunscreen is essential, but it needs to be applied properly and reapplied. UPF clothing gives covered skin consistent protection, no reapplication required.

MYTH 02

I don’t burn, so I’m safe.

You don’t have to burn to experience sun damage. A tan itself is a sign of UV damage, and that damage adds up over time.

MYTH 03

I need sun for vitamin D.

Your skin can produce vitamin D with relatively brief sun exposure. You don’t need to spend hours unprotected to get the benefits of being outside.

MYTH 04

UPF clothing is uncomfortable.

UPF 50+ protection can be lightweight, breathable and something you actually want to wear.
